India have always been poor travelers, but their stock under MS Dhoni has plummeted to alarming levels, with the team losing 10 of their last 12 'away' Test matches. Stung by public criticism, the BCCI, reports ESPNcricinfo, has decided to review what goes wrong each time their heroes at home set foot abroad. Too little too late? At least, it's a start for the side helmed by Dhoni and Duncan Fletcher, one that suffered whitewashes in England and Australia in 2011 and went on to lose in South Africa and New Zealand more recently.
"We want to take stock of the situation," a BCCI source told ESPNcricinfo, "We want to know what is going wrong. We would like to know from them what is required to improve."
The overseas defeats have triggered a wide-ranging debate including some scathing remarks from two recent former India captains: Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. "Our reputation has been tarnished, but Dhoni needs help," Ganguly told TV channel Headlines Today. "I don't know what Duncan Fletcher is doing. The approach needs to be right, and Fletcher needs to help Dhoni. He has clearly struggled and he needs to be more involved. He needs to plan better and the selectors have to assess and get the right squad."
Meanwhile, another report in Hindustan Times stated that the BCCI has been in talks with Andy Flower as a possible replacement for Fletcher.
"Nothing has been finalised as these are preliminary talks with the Board likely to invite applications from suitable candidates for the post next month. Routine process would be followed before handing the responsibilities to the new coach. But so far, Flower has been contacted and let's see who win the race," the report quoted a source as saying.
