From Dale Steyn’s brilliant spell of reverse swing bowling, to Chris Rogers’s suicidal run out after compiling a gutsy century, to the incorrect decision to give Nathan Lyon out in the last over of the day, there was cricketing madness wherever you looked in Port Elizabeth.
To break it down for those that were fast asleep as Australia’s cricketers were put to bed, we’ve compiled a timeline of the crazy and ultimately disastrous day as it unfolded.
10.30am local time – Day four starts
10.52am - Hashim Amla reaches his 21st Test hundred with a lovely boundary off Ryan Harris
11.47am - South Africa declares on 5-270, setting Australia 448 for an unlikely victory given heavy rain is predicted for day five.
1.23pm - Australia reaches 0-55 off just 11 overs as David Warner belts 18 runs off one over from Morne Morkel
2.19pm - Warner and Chris Rogers bring up their century opening stand.
2.38pm - Warner out lbw to JP Duminy for 66. Australia 1-126
3.10pm - Rogers handed a lifeline after replays show he edged a ball that South Africa appealed for but didn’t review when it was given not out by the on-field umpire.
3.11pm - Australia goes to tea looking certain to push the match into a fifth day, with the score 1-141

3.59pm - Alex Doolan out for 5 off 42 balls. Australia 2-152
