Graeme Smith.
South Africa was 369 ahead with six wickets in hand and two days to play in the second Test yet Clarke claimed if the situations were reversed he would already have declared.
“I would have had five overs tonight if we were in that position, but that’s me,” a provocative Clarke said.
Told by a South African journalist he was joking, Clarke replied: “You obviously haven’t been following my captaincy.”
By making such a point of saying he would have already declared, Clarke has shone the spotlight on the inherently conservative way South Africa play.

“We can still win. It’s obviously going to be an uphill battle, there’s no doubt about that, but that will be determined by how many runs we have to chase, I guess,” said Clarke.
While South Africa is clearly in an overwhelming position, Smith has three issues to confront regarding the timing of his declaration at some stage Sunday.
A groin injury to left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell has left Smith a bowler short, he has no front line spinner and heavy rain is forecast for Monday.
