The Vizay Hazare Trophy match of the south zone leg between Karnataka and Hyderabad ended in a thrilling tie. Put into bat, Karnataka recovered from an early wobble to post 248 for eight with captain R Vinay Kumar top-scoring with an unbeaten 47.

Hyderabad seemed to be on course in their run chase as they were 142 for two in the 31st over but suffered a batting collapse, triggered by Vinay Kumar (5/42), to be reduced to 165 for six in the 38th over.

“According to my estimate, within this period [2015 to 2023] of eight years we [BCCI] will get around USD 600 million,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told a local news channel.

Patel was here in connection with the BCCI Working Committee meeting in the city today. Incidentally, during this 2015-23 period, India would be a permanent member of the three major committees of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

On the substantial increase in the BCCI’s revenue sharing with the ICC, he said, “Since past so many years BCCI has become one of the biggest contributors towards ICC’s earnings.”

BCCI is contributing about 68 per cent of the revenue and getting only four per cent in return, he said.

“I am pleased to announce instead of four per cent share, BCCI will now get 21 per cent. During 2015-23, BCCI’s expected gross revenue will be close to 2.75 to three billion dollars,” he said.

Under the existing provisions, 75 per cent of the ICC’s earnings are divided equally among the 10 full member countries and the rest goes to its associate members.

“Again out of the remainder, India will get another four per cent
Selection panel chairperson Julie Savage said: “Although it’s disappointing Jodie won’t be joining the team for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20, we respect and support her decision to put the team first. Jodie made it clear that it was just for this tournament and she has every intention of making herself available for the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars in the future.

“Beth Mooney has been added to the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad that will depart for Bangladesh next month. Beth has had a very strong season with the Konica Minolta Queensland Fire, which culminated in their victory in the WT20 Final. She also travelled to Sri Lanka recently with the Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars where she performed well with the bat and gloves against Sri Lanka A.”

West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara is reportedly dating former Miss Scotland Jamey Bowers.

The batting great was introduced to Bowers, who is 20 years his junior, by former Manchester United and Trinidad and Tobago striker Dwight Yorke.

“It’s early days. I didn’t want anyone to know, but Brian’s been declaring his love all over the place,” the Daily Mail quoted Bowers as saying in the Edinburgh News.

“He’s charming, romantic and fun. We’ll see what happens.”

Lara, 44, is considered one of the greatest batsmen of all time.

He holds several cricketing records, including the highest individual score in First-Class cricket, with 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston in 1994.

Lara also has the record for the highest individual score in Tests, scoring 400 not out against England at Antigua in 2004.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Working Committee devised a strategy by which they can at least hold a substantial part of the seventh edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) in India as per the wishes of the franchises if the counting of votes in the general elections end by May 15.

As per the discussions at the meeting, the IPL will only be held in South Africa if the T20 event is organised there in its entirety. Or else, Bangladesh or United Arab Emirates will hold three to five rounds till the end of the entire election process.

“The members are of the opinion that it will be held in South Africa only if the entire election process with the countings and everything is not completed till the end of May. It will not be partly held in South Africa,” a senior working committee member preferring anonymity told PTI today.

He also said that BCCI is keeping its fingers crossed and hoping that the counting finishes by May 15.

“Our vice-president Rajeev Shukla informed the committee that election dates will be announced by March 5. If the entire electoral process ends by May 15, then we can have the first few rounds in UAE and Bangladesh, which also won’t be a logistical nightmare,” the senior official added.

“Post May 15, as the government would be able to provide security, the tournament will come back to India. We can’t make our stakeholders angry. The franchises, the principal sponsors including the title sponsors want it to be held in India”, the official said.

“So we are going to try and organize for the maximum number of matches in India. We can’t deny the franchises from getting their share of gate sales and initiate brand activation procedure,”

England captain Stuart Broad said that the players lacked taking responsibility and there was a lot of ‘you didn’t do that’ on the field as England warmed up ahead of their first match in a three one-day internationals series against West Indies.

Broad reportedly told teammates to stop blaming each other for England’s poor performance in the Ashes series and to follow Joe Root’s example in their limited-overs series against West Indies.

Statistical highlights of the Asia Cup match between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Kevin Pietersen blasted his ex-team mate Matt Prior for saying that the England dressing room was a better place without the former captain.

Pietersen took to Twitter to say that Test vice-captain Prior should focus on his own form since he was under pressure to retain his place in the Test side from ODI keeper Jos Butler after a disastrous Ashes.

“Fewer Q&A’s, more Sussex nets methinks, @MattPrior! #josbuttler,” Pietersen tweeted.

It started off a battle between the two cricketers and Prior also hit back saying “showing your class again Kevin… idiot” and “that will be why KP isn’t in the England set-up anymore”.

Pietersen tweeted saying “neither is The Big Cheese Prior!” referring to Prior’s nickname that he had during his early brash days in the England dressing room.

Prior, during an interview in Dubai when asked whether the dressing room would be a better place without Pietersen, reportedly said “yes, it will.”

“One of the biggest things the ECB [England and Wales Cricket Board] want to rediscover is the value of playing cricket for England. The honour and the pride you need to show as an England cricketer. And they only want people in that dressing room that are going to be passionate about England winning and performing,” Prior was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

During a training session here on the eve of the decider of the three-Test series, the Australian pacers worked a lot with old balls that had been scratched to promote reverse swing.

“We were cheating today, scraping it on the concrete. It’s good practice for the batters because it actually goes a lot more than what it does in a game,” fast bowler Ryan Harris was quoted as saying in the Australian media.

he said.

The Australian pacers want to copy South Africa pacer Dale Steyn‘s approach to the bowling crease.

Australia’s chief coach Darren Lehmann and batting coach Michael Di Venuto tested the batsmen with the bowling machines to deliver extreme inswingers like those of Steyn in Port Elizabeth.

“The guys were getting used to facing those balls coming back in late and finding a way to combat it. The bowlers had it swinging both ways,” Di Venuto said.

"Steyn’s reverse swing was exceptional in the second Test."

Many might not know this but the ongoing Asia Cup 2014 is not the first time that Virat Kohli’s skills as a captain are being tested. Kohli led the Indian Under-19 team in a series in Malaysia in 2008 and it was there that he earned his merit as a leader for the first time.

Similarly, he led the Indian team in a series against Zimbabwe in 2013 and was also captain for a few matches against West Indies in the same year. On both occasions, he further reiterated his value as a skipper.

India is one country which makes the best use of its young U-19 talent and Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are prime examples of this. However, with Dhoni’s consistency as a captain and his relentless performance, Kohli has not been able to showcase his talent and ability.

West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo lead a brilliant fight back after England seized the initiative earlier in the innings. Bravo was amply supported by a well-crafted half-century by Lendl Simmons and a late assault by Darren Sammy to propel West Indies to 269 for six.

Experienced Kumar Sangakkara showed the way with a breathtaking 84-ball 103 as Sri Lanka recovered from a middle-order batting collapse to pull off a thrilling two-wicket victory.

Chasing 265 for win after opting to bowl first, the islanders rode on the 36-year-old’s masterclass to complete the task with four balls to spare at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli said the toss proved to be “crucial” and added that his batsmen could have played “smarter cricket” as they went down to Sri Lanka by two wickets in their Asia Cup 2014 encounter on Today.

When Kuldeep Yadav created history by becoming the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2014 game against Scotland, the feat has reminded this writer of the many Chinaman bowlers who have graced the game, the most famous in recent times being Brad Hogg of Australia and Paul Adams of South Africa. Technically a Chinaman bowler is a left-arm wrist spinner who can turn the ball from off to leg (from a right-handed batsman’s perspective) and has an unorthodox bowling action.

India skipper Virat Kohli said the dew on the ground was “way beyond our expectations” but credited his bowlers for taking their Asia Cup 2014 match against Sri Lanka into the last over, here today.

Sri Lanka chased down the 265-run target set by India in 49.2 overs, courtesy a marvellous century by experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara.

“I think the bowlers did a good job, there was a lot of dew in the end. We didn’t expect so much dew because there wasn’t so much of it yesterday. But credit to them [bowlers] to take it to the last over,” Kohli said at the presentation ceremony.

While praising all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for tilting the match in India’s favour with two quick strikes, Kohli said his batsman could have added 25-odd runs to the eventual total had they batted more smartly.

Kumar Sangakkara‘s brilliant form continued as he scored his 18th One-Day International century to lead Sri Lanka to a narrow two-wicket win over India in the fourth match of the Asia Cup 2014 at Fatullah on Friday. Chasing 265, Sri Lanka got there in 49.1 overs.

It was the brittle middle-order of both sides which kept the match exciting. While the untested middle-order of India fell apart during their batting powerplay, the Sri Lankans were done in by Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami.

Sri Lanka might have put one step in the final of the Asia Cup 2014 with their second win in as many matches, but skipper Angelo Mathews said they would take one game at a time and look to get better.

“We have been winning those close games once again… it was a nervous games. We have been doing those little things right. We got to play better cricket to win against stronger teams. It could have been a bit easier than what it was.
The middle order collapsed and made it hard for the lower order to finish,” Mathews said after their two-wicket victory.
Experienced Kumar Sangakkara showed the way with a breathtaking 84-ball 103 as Sri Lanka recovered from a middle-order batting collapse to pull off a thrilling win.
Chasing 265 for win after opting to bowl first, the islanders rode on the 36-year-old’s masterclass to complete the task with four balls to spare.”He’s a true champion. He has done so many times for us in the past. It’s a treat to watch him bat. It’s one of the best innings that I’ve seen in the recent past.”
On the move to play an extra spinner in Ajantha Mendis, he said: “We were geared up for both. We wanted to chase anyway because of the dew factor. We fell that the wicket was very slow and so thought of Mendis instead of Suranga Lakmal.”
But he denied that toss was a factor.
“India would have bowled first as well. I can’t say tricky. It turned quite a bit when Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were bowling, our batters had to work hard. We had the batting depth to be up for the challenge.
“We still have two more games to play good cricket. We saw how Afghanistan played against Pakistan. We cannot take them lightly. we still need to play some really good cricket before the final.”

India lost the wicket of Virat Kohli for 48 but Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane kept the score moving against Sri Lanka in the fourth Asia Cup 2014 match at Fatullah. India are on 162 for two in 33 overs.

Kohli was beaten on the defense by Ajantha Mendis. Kohli failed to read the carom ball and tried to close the face of his bat but the ball passed his outside edge and hit the stumps.

Dhawan has done well to score his sixth ODI fifty and is well on his way for his ton. Dhawan initially went for his strokes but found the runs hard to come by. While Rohit Sharma failed to adapt, Dhawan’s confidence quickly built up as he drove Lasith Malinga through the covers and followed it up with a push to get two consecutive boundaries. He then started playing with soft hands and collected the quick singles.

Out of favour he might be right now but former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly feels seasoned off-spinner Harbhajan Singh can make a comeback if the selectors look beyond those favoured by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

“I think Bhajji can make a comeback to the national side in both form of the game,” Ganguly told a news channel.

Describing Harbhajan as one of the country’s top spinners, the former India captain slammed the selectors for not choosing the Jalandhar man over Dhoni’s choice.

“I believe the selectors don’t think much on this (Harbhajan’s selection) and especially when you have captain’s men around,” Ganguly said.

Incidentally, Harbhajan, who last played a Test against Australia in March 2013, has played six Ranji Trophy 2013-14 matches this season picking up 23 wickets at an average of 26.60.

The former captain was not too convinced about leg-spinner Amit Mishra’s inclusion in the Indian squad for both the Asia Cup 2014 and the ICC World T20 2014 World Cup at the expense of Harbhajan and Pragyan Ojha.

Describing Mishra as an “average spinner who is slow in the air,” Ganguly pointed out that it would be tough for the Indians to contain batsmen from scoring.

Virat Kohli leads India in the absence of MS Dhoni. Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Ishant Sharma have not been selected in the squad, so, Kohli leads a young and relatively inexperienced Indian team in the Asia Cup. Onus will be on Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma to score the runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami will lead the bowling attack.

Bangladesh will be looking for another upset over India in the tournament. They lost in the final in the 2012 edition.
South Africa elected to bat first after winning the toss against Australia in the ICC Under-19 World Cup semi-final at Dubai on Wednesday. Australia have a strong side with Gregory leading them. Matthew Short and Jaron Morgan formed a good opening stand in the quarter-final and would most probably be persisted with.

For South Africa Aiden Makram leads the South Africans full of confidence. He has been a prime batsman for them in this tournament and was a star of the quarter-final against Afghanistan. Yaseen Valli is their other main batsman for the tournament. Kirwin Christoffels has also been amongst the runs

Misbah-ul-Haq is key to Pakistan’s chase as they reached 141 for four from 28 overs, chasing 297 to win against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Asia Cup 2014.

Misbah and Sohaib Maqsood had steadied Pakistan, as they reached 38 runs from 10 overs after losing quick wickets early on. However, Maqsood’s dismissal in a bizarre manner put Pakistan under more pressure.

Maqsood went after a very short delivery from Sri Lanka spinner Sachithra Senanayake, but found the fielder at deep midwicket. He scored 17 off 27 balls. Pakistan require 156 more runs to win from 22 overs.

This was after Sri Lanka fought back with quick wickets in form of Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad as Pakistan slipped to for three after 14 overs. While Shehzad was cleaned up by Chaturanga de Silva for 28, Hafeez was trapped in front of the wickets for 18. This was after Shehzad and Hafeez lead Pakistan’s recovery with their 49-run stand for the second wicket.

Earlier in the match, Lahiru Thirimanne slammed his second One-Day International (ODI) century while Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews struck fifties, to help Sri Lanka post a challenging target of 297 against Pakistan.

Electing to bat first, Sri Lanka squandered a perfect opportunity of posting a huge total as they reached 296 for six in their allotted 50 overs.

Thirimanne faced 110 balls, smashed 11 boundaries and a six to score 102, and added 161 runs for the second wicket with Sangakkara to help Sri Lanka consolidate their stand, before Pakistan fought and pulled back things in control.

India tour of New Zealand 2014Axed from India‘s One-Day International (ODI) squad, pace spearhead Ishant Sharma has excused himself from Delhi‘s first two Vijay Hazare Trophy (North Zone one-dayers) matches citing fatigue after having bowled a lot of overs during the recently concluded Test series in New Zealand.

Delhi will open their campaign against Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground on Thursday and will play the formidable Punjab side in their second game on March 1. Ishant will be missing both the matches.

“Ishant has just come back from New Zealand. He has bowled a lot of overs and had asked us for rest. That’s why the team management has decided to give him rest for the first couple of games. That’s why, he is not even training currently,” Delhi’s chief coach Sanjeev Sharma told PTI on Tuesday.

Ishant has bowled 96 overs in two Test matches in New Zealand where he took 15 wickets including two six-wicket hauls. He was good in patches but overall very inconsistent.

He bowled 62 overs in the second Test including 45 overs of wicketless bowling in the second innings when Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling took the game away from India.

Asked whether Ishant will be available for Delhi’s third match against Himachal Pradesh, coach Sharma sounded positive.

“We expect him to play in the match against Himachal Pradesh,” Sharma said about the bowler who has taken 164 wickets from 55 Test matches.

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is in the spot-light once again as reports have emerged of him not spending even a single rupee during his tenure as Rajya Sabha member in his respected area.

Along with Tendulkar, yesteryear Bollywood actress Rekha is also believed to have contributed nothing as her role as a Rajya Sabha member and has failed to even adopt a district, reports the Times of India.

It may well be remembered that Tendulkar was adopted as a Rajya Sabha member in 2012 and had also chosen Mumbai suburban as his choice of district.

But sadly the Mumbai maestro till date has not done any contribution of note in his role as Rajya Sabha member and according to reports he has not spent even a single rupee from his ‘Members of Parliament Local Area Development’ (MPLAD) fund.

Rajya Sabha rules state that the Upper House members of parliament get to chose a district of their choice and also are allotted a fee of INR 5 crore in their MPLAD fund.

Reports further state that Tendulkar has not sent any development project proposal to the government over the years and has also a collective fund of INR 10 crore in his two-year old account.

Sri Lanka : 296-6 (50 overs)
Pakistan : 284 (48.5 overs)

Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal slammed centuries to lead Pakistan‘s charge in their chase of 297 against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Asia Cup 2014. Pakistan reached 231 for four after 41 overs, requiring 66 more runs to win from remaining nine overs.

Earlier in the innings, Sohaib Maqsood’s dismissal in a bizarre manner put Pakistan under more pressure.

Lasith Malinga claimed five wickets towards the end to snatch a victory from Pakistan, and lead Sri Lanka to a narrow 12-run win in the opening One-Day International (ODI) match of the Asia Cup 2014 tournament at Fatullah on Tuesday. Pakistan, chasing 297 to win, were bowled out for 284 in 48.5 overs.

Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal added 121 runs for the fifth wicket, reviving their side and putting them on course for a win at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, but their effort went in vain.

Malinga returned in the 45th over of the innings, which proved to be a masterstroke by the Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews. Malinga claimed two wickets — including the priced scalp of Misbah — to put Sri Lanka back in control of the game. Shahid Afridi disappointed once again as he was dismissed in the fourth ball of the over.

In the penultimate over of the match, Malinga trapped Saeed Ajmal in front of the wickets and cleaned up Bilawal Bhatti to lead Sri Lanka to a memorable win in the tournament.

With this five-wicket haul, Malinga also completed 250 wickets in ODIs, becoming the fastest Sri Lankan to achieve the feat.

Chasing a huge target of 297 runs to win, Pakistan innings was a roller-coaster ride as the momentum kept swinging between the two sides. Pakistan made a confident start to their chase, with Sharjeel Khan taking the attack to the opposition. The 24-year-old left-handed batsman showed aggressive intent in the beginning, playing strokes around the park with ease.

Sharjeel started off with a boundary on the final ball of the first over, and hit consecutive boundaries off Malinga in the fifth over. He welcomed Sri Lanka spinner Sachithra Senanayake with a six over the midwicket region in the next.

But on the first ball of the seventh over, Sharjeel mistimed a pull off Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Mathews took a simple catch.

Ahmed Shehzad had struggled till then — he had faced 14 balls for one run by the end of seventh over. But Sharjeel’s dismissal saw Shehzad taking over the charge of being the aggressor, as he cracked some excellent drives through covers for fours.

Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez not only rescued them from the trouble but also added 49 runs for the second wicket. But in the 13th over, Chaturanga de Silva rocked Pakistan as he found gap between Shehzad’s bat and pad, as the ball crashed into the wickets. Shehzad fell after scoring 28 off 37 balls with the help of four boundaries.

There was more trouble in store for Pakistan as in the next over, a delivery from Mathews kept low and Hafeez was hit in front of the wickets.

Sohaib Maqsood failed too, as he went after an awkwardly short delivery from Senanayake and found the fielder at deep midwicket. Pakistan were at 122 for four after 24 overs.

Misbah then joined forces with Umar, as the two right-handed batsmen thwarted all threats from the Sri Lankan bowlers as well as the pitch, which kept surprising with its uneven bounce on couple of occasions. While Misbah went about his innings with the usual calm and composed approach, Umar took time to settle in. Both the batsmen found scoring easy as the pitch did not offer much turn and bounce and was easy to bat.

Umar, after seeing off few initial deliveries, opened up in the 29th over, slamming a six over the midwicket region off Mathews. He followed this up with a fine stroke for six and a boundary off Lakmal to break the shackles.

While Misbah brought up his half-century in the 36th over, Umar achieved the feat in the 41st over with a boundary off Lakmal. The Pakistani batsman had a special liking for the right-arm Sri Lankan pacer, as he followed that up with a six and a boundary to put Pakistan in complete command. Umar carried the momentum in the next over, clobbering two boundaries off de Silva.

It was Lakmal who had the last laugh, as he got Umar caught behind the wickets by Kumar Sangakkara for 74 off 72 balls. Umar hit three sixes and seven boundaries during his stay at the crease.

Earlier in the first innings, Lahiru Thirimanne slammed his second One-Day International (ODI) century while Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews struck fifties, to help Sri Lanka post a challenging target of 297.

Sangakkara, on the other hand, continued his good run with the bat as he completed yet another half-century, scoring 67 runs off 65 balls with the help of eight boundaries.

Brief scores:

Sri Lanka 296 for 6 in 50 overs (Lahiru Thirimanne 102, Kumar Sangakkara 67, Angelo Mathews 55*; Umar Gul 2 for 38, Shahid Afridi 2 for 56) beat Pakistan 284 in 48.5 overs (Misbah-ul-Haq 73, Umar Akmal 74; Lasith Malinga 5 for 52) by 12 runs.

Man of the Match: Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga became the fastest Sri Lankan to take 250 One-Day International (ODI) wickets. Malinga achieved this feat when he completed a five-wicket haul to script a 12-run win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2014 at Fatullah. Malinga took 163 ODIs to reach the mark, surpassing Muttiah Muralitharan who did it in 174 ODIs. Malinga is overall sixth on the list of the fastest to reach the 250 ODI wickets feat.

Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq is the fastest to reach the 250 wickets mark.  As far as Sri Lankans are concerned, apart from Muralitharan and Malinga, Chaminda Vaas too has 250 wickets. He took 204 ODIs.

Malinga, before this match had 245 wickets to his name. In the first match of the Asia Cup, Malinga was carted for few runs early on. But the pacer with a slingy action rattled the Pakistanis picking five wickets in a span of just 14 deliveries. He was adjudged man of the match for his match-winning efforts.

Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews heaped praise on Lasith Malinga, who played a crucial role in his side’s 12-run win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2014 opener, and said the right-arm fast bowler has been his “go to man” under pressure situations.

Malinga took a brilliant five-wicket haul under pressure after opener Lahiru Thirimanne hit his second One-Day International (ODI) century to help Sri Lanka script a thrilling win over Pakistan at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.

“Malinga is the best bowler for us and has been in the past few years. Whenever we are under pressure he is our go to man and he did it again,” Mathews said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Asked whether Malinga was underbowled, Mathews replied: “Well, maybe I’ll try to bowl him more.”

Malinga produced a sensational spell of death bowling, picking up key wickets at crucial junctures, to ensure the win for his side with seven balls to spare.

Chasing an imposing 297 for victory, Pakistan were on course for a remarkable victory before Malinga came up with a fiery spell to bowl out the ‘Men in Green’ for 284 in 48.5 overs.

Malinga first sent back dangerman Shahid Afridi (4) and well-settled skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (73) in a span of three deliveries in his eighth over before returning back to dismiss Saeed Ajmal (10) and Bilawal Bhatti (18) in his final over to finish with figures of 5 for 52.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly wants Virat Kohli to win the Asia Cup 2014, which he believes would help regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to come out of his comfort zone and reinvent himself as a captain.

“I want Virat [Kohli] to win this tournament [Asia Cup],” Ganguly told a news channel on Tuesday.

“This would help Dhoni to come out of the comfort zone and help him to reinvent himself as a captain,” he explained.

Rubbishing suggestions that it would be a test for Kohli as a captain, Ganguly said the Delhi batsman should enjoy captaincy and prove his strengths to the selectors.

“It would be inappropriate to say that Kohli would be under pressure in the Asia Cup because even he knows that Dhoni would be the captain in the Twenty20 World Cup. So I would advice him to enjoy his captaincy and prove his strengths as a captain,” Ganguly said.

Asked whether captaincy would have any adverse effect on Kohli’s batting, Ganguly recollected the right-hand batsman’s stellar role with the bat in the tri-series in West Indies in 2013.

“It would not be right to predict on Kohli’s captaincy now. But I would like to remind everybody the way Kohli led the team and batted in the West Indies.

“He had scored a 100 there and that helped India to get into the finals,” the 42-year-old former captain said.

Ganguly, however, slammed former Australian skipper Ian Chappell for describing Dhoni as a “meander along like an absent-minded professor strolling in the park”.

“I don’t agree with his [Chappell's] opinion. I think Chappell should rethink about this comments,” he said.

Chappell in his column for a website had written that Kohli should replace Dhoni as the Test captain after India’s below par performance in England, South Africa and in the recently-concluded New Zealand tour.

Talking about India’s strategy in their opening match against Bangladesh in Fatullah on Wednesday, Ganguly advised Kohli to go with five bowlers, including three pacers.

He reasoned that sides playing in the tournament are accustomed to spin bowling and given the flat pitches of Bangladesh, pacers could be the best bet for Kohli to earn fruitful results.

In batting, Ganguly suggested Kohli should come at number four position to balance the order while Ajinkya Rahane should bat at number five.

In fact, Ganguly said, Dhoni’s absence in the middle-order would also be a test for Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

As Ranchi is eagerly waiting to host its first international Test match, a high-level International Cricket Council (ICC) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) team would inspect the facilities at the Jharkand State Cricket Association (JSCA)International Stadium on Wednesday.

“The ICC/BCCI team will visit the JSCA International Stadium at 11am on Wednesday. The inspection is with respect to granting a Test status to Ranchi,” said a JSCA press release.

The JSCA has hosted One Day Internationals (ODI), Champions Trophy and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches successfully.

Several international cricketers, including Australians and England players, had said that they were immensely impressed with the facilities, conditions and the ground.

Ranchi hosted its first ODI between India and England two years ago.

It will be a new challenge for a young Indian team, led by Virat Kohli, as they start Asia Cup 2014 campaign with their first One-Day International (ODI) against hosts Bangladesh in Fatullah on Wednesday.

Sans MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, the young Indian team will be looking to come back to winning ways after suffering ODI series losses in South Africa and New Zealand. All the three players were members of the team that played the last Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

While Yuvraj and Raina have been dropped for their poor performance, Dhoni was ruled out with a side strain.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who has replaced Dhoni, on Tuesday said only players who were on the touring party to South Africa and New Zealand can say why the team lost the series.

“Actually, you should have asked this question to somebody who was part of these eight ODIs,” he said after the team’s practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium at Mirpur.

Karthik, however, feels that as an outsider he will bring some freshness to the side.

“From an outsider point of view, I’m coming into this team fresh. As an individual I can talk of my perspective and say that for me it’s going to be exciting. I’m sure it’s the same for all the players. But somebody who has played those eight games will answer this question much better,” he said.

Karthik, 28, who has featured in 67 ODIs, said he was not bothered with a last minute call-up to the national team.

“I got to know about three-four days back, I guess I’m used to it now being called so many times. It doesn’t play on my mind too much,” he said.

Karthik said it was important for him to get into the zone before the match.

“For me it’s about coming out here… It’s important to get into the zone just before the game. Obviously as a player I’m very excited to be a part of this Indian cricket team. It’s one of the best teams available. For me, it’s an honour to represent India and do the best that I can,” he said.
An unbeaten 59-run stand for the fifth wicket between Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal has put Pakistan back on track in their chase of 297 against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Asia Cup 2014.

Pakistan reached 180 for four after 34 overs, requiring 117 more runs to win from remaining 16 overs.

Both the batsmen are starting to open up against the Sri Lankan bowlers, picking up boundaries at regular intervals and rotating the strike easily.  Earlier in the innings, Sohaib Maqsood’s dismissal in a bizarre manner put Pakistan under more pressure.

Cricketer Pragyan Ojha on Tuesday joined the list of celebrities who have teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to voice the cause of cruelty towards animals in zoos.

The ace leg-spinner locked himself up in a cage with a placard that read: “Try to relate to their fate: say no to zoos” at an event.

“Just the thought of getting locked up in a tiny cage, even for a short time, makes my head spin. Think about the animals who are locked up their entire lives.

“Animals don’t belong in cages. They deserve to roam, explore, socialise and enjoy freedom just like us,” a PETA statement said quoting Ojha.

South African cricketer Wayne Parnell, shuttler Jwala Gutta, sitar player Anoushka Shankar and actor Rahul Khanna are among other celebrities who have teamed up with PETA to highlight the cause of “cruelty of zoos”, the release said.

Brendon McCullum became New Zealand's first triple-centurion in 84 years of Test cricket on Tuesday, securing a famous series win against India and uniting the country in praise.
The bearded captain, 32, who is carrying multiple injuries, batted for nearly 13 hours for a match-saving 302 which put him in the company of all-time greats Don Bradman and Wally Hammond.
Wellington's Basin Reserve erupted in a standing ovation as McCullum cut Zaheer Khan for four to reach 300, and the applause resumed just two balls later when he was out caught behind.

India colts salvaged some pride as they comfortably beat their Sri Lankan counterparts by 76 runs in a fifth-place play-off semi-final match at the ICC U-19 World Cup on Monday.

In absence of skipper Vijay Zol, who was banned for breaching International Cricket Council‘s (ICC) Code of Conduct, the Sanju Samson led side piled up 291 for seven in the stipulated 50 overs at the ICC Cricket Academy ground in Dubai.

In reply, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 215 in 48.1 overs.

Deepak Hooda starred with an all-round performance of an unbeaten 76 off 57 balls with the bat and 3 for 31 in 10 overs with his off-breaks.

Shreyash Iyer (59) and Samson (40) also made useful contributions.

Hooda, whose poor penultimate over tilted the semi-final in England’s favour, hit seven boundaries and four huge sixes.

He added 81 runs in only 8.5 overs with Kuldeep Yadav (19 not-out) holding one end up.

Earlier, Akhil Herwadkar (23) and Ankush Bains (29) added 57 runs for the opening stand, while Iyer and Samson added 87 runs for the third wicket stand.

Sri Lanka were never in the game as only opener Sadeera Samarawickrama (58) and Priyamal Perera (47) made notable contributions as Hooda and left-arm orthodox Karan Kalia (2 for 39) snared five wickets between them for only 70 runs in 20 overs.

Left-arm chinaman Yadav was expensive, but in the end got a couple of wickets.

Brief Scores:

India U-19  291 for 7 in 50 overs (Deepak Hooda 76*, Shreyash Iyer 59*; Hashane Ramanayake 2 for 46) beat  Sri Lanka U-19  215 in 48.1 overs (Sadeera Samarawickrama 58, Deepak Hooda 3 for 31)  by 76 runs.
England fought back with quick wickets after the partnership between Saud Shakeel and Ameer Hamza in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2014 in Dubai. After an 84-run fifth wicket partnership, Rob Sayer struck by dismissing Hamza with a fuller delivery. New man Saifullah Khan to was caught behind for a duck. Pakistan are 140 for six in 36 overs. They need another 65 runs in 84 deliveries.

Sayer had earlier got skipper Sami Aslam with a fuller delivery. It was a similar dismissal for Hamza who scored 35 runs. Pakistan were down 57 for four when Shakeel and Hamza came together. They played in a mature manner content taking singles and twos. Leg-spinner Robert Jones kept his line tight and bowled for seven overs on the trot.

The second innings of the match has been a roller coaster ride, with Pakistan getting off to a good start and then losing wickets in succession.

The woes of Pakistan‘s banned leg-spinner Danish Kaneria continued with a commercial high court in London asking him to deposit a hefty security amount if he wants his appeal against the life ban to be heard.

The commercial court bench headed by Justice Andrew Smith held a behind the closed doors hearing in London in which Kaneria’s appeal against the costs of 20,000 pounds was claimed from him by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and his life ban were deliberated upon.

“The ECB has pushed for the appeal to be split and heard separately and the court has told me to deposit a security amount of 20,000 pounds if I want my appeal against the life ban to be heard on 11th April,” Kaneira told PTI.

“If I can’t deposit the amount the hearing will not be held on 11th April,” he said.

The Test leg-spinner said he had informed the court that he was not in any position to make such a hefty deposit.

“Since the last three years I have been fighting to get justice in this case on my own and I have spent out of my earnings and savings with no assistance from anyone including the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB),” he said.

“After the money I have spent today I am no longer in any position to arrange for such a big amount,” he added.

Kaneria said the ECB had also pushed for the court to get him to deposit another amount of 14,000 pounds in the appeal hearing against the costs claimed from him by the ECB.

“I can now only appeal to the PCB to look into my case even now and do something because now they are not ever hearing my appeal,” he said.

Kaneria’s flourishing career was halted in late 2010 when allegations of spot fixing in an English county match in September 2009 first emerged against him publicly.

The ECB disciplinary panel banned him for life in June, 2012 and Kaneria also lost his appeal before a panel of the ECB last year with the PCB also endorsing the life ban to shut him out completely from cricket in Pakistan.
Legendary batsman Gundappa Vishwanath feels that the current Indian cricket team needs to perform more consistently in all areas of the game in order to become a formidable force.

Speaking at the inauguration of a cricket academy set up by Maxtalent Global Sports in partnership with Sports Square, Vishwanath said the experience of playing abroad before the ICC World Cup 2015 would help the team, according to a release from the organizers.

Observing that cricket academies are mushrooming in the country without having necessary infrastructure or coaches, the release quoted him as saying that the coach should be someone who has played cricket and that the coaches should not be mere drill-masters.

He appreciated the facilities like well laid out turf, good coaches at Sports Square, the release said.

The cricket academy would provide students with brilliant opportunities and offer expert training under regular coaches and “legends of the game,” it added.

Pakistan‘s former Test batsman Basit Ali on Monday stuck to his earlier allegations that a match between Karachi Dolphins and Sialkot Stallions in the recent National T20 Championship was fixed.

Basit stuck to his claims when he appeared before the three-member inquiry tribunal at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The tribunal that includes the security manager of the Board, former Test players Shafiq Ahmed — who is also GM domestic cricket — and Ali Naqvi was formed by the Pakistan Cricket Board to probe into the allegations made by Basit recently.

Pakistan all-rounder and captain of the Sialkot team, Shoaib Malik and other officials also appeared before the inquiry committee.

“The committee asked me to furnish evidence that the match was fixed. But I have told them that even if hard evidence is not available as a former player one can sense when something is wrong in a match,” Basit told reporters after the hearing.

“I told them that I had been first informed about the match being fixed by the coach of the Sialkot team Ejaz Ahmed Jr who has also been called by the committee,” Basit said.

The former Test player said he did not wish to harm Pakistan cricket but only wanted the truth to come out.

“I felt something was not right in that match and when Ejaz also spoke on similar lines I had to speak out the truth,” Basit said.

Malik has dismissed the claims by Basit and said in future the PCB needed to have strict laws to deal with such serious allegations that make a laughing stock of Pakistan cricket.

“The PCB needs to have strong libel laws to deal with such allegations. If they are proven incorrect then strong action needs to be taken against the accuser,” Malik said.

Karachi won the low scoring match as both teams crashed out of the semifinals of the National T20 event in Rawalpindi.
